Dr. Ann Stacker graduated with High Honors from UC Santa Barbara in the early seventies with her Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Biology. To gain hands-on experience in preparation for veterinary school, she went to work for a small animal veterinary hospital as an animal care assistant and then operated a horse-boarding stable for a year with her husband Greg. Accepted to veterinary school at the University of California, Davis, she graduated in the top 10% of her class in 1981 with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, Dr. Ann worked for two small animal hospitals in Southern California honing her skills and gaining extensive experience with not only cats and dogs, but also many varieties of exotic species including birds, reptiles, rabbits and small mammals. Starting in the mid-eighties, she began doing relief work for several veterinarians here in San Luis Obispo County before our move here in 2000 to build and open Paso Petcare. Dr. Ann is a passionate and dedicated professional committed to continuing education to ensure we provide the highest quality medicine. She practices with a calm and gentle demeanor, with particular interest in surgery and dermatology, but truly enjoys providing a full range of services to our pet patients, as well as interacting with their owners who are very loyal to her – and many have become personal friends. Outside of work Ann enjoys music, cooking, reading, travel and the outdoors, spending peaceful time at her yurt in the beautiful Adelaida area, playing weekly games with her “Scrabble Ladies” and proudly watching her twin daughters develop into exceptional adults and accomplished research scientists.

Dr. Robert Johnson completed his undergraduate studies in 1974 with his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Pennsylvania State University and then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, earning his degree as a Veterinary Medical Doctor in 1978. After graduation he continued his education attending Farrier school and then completing an externship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery from the University of Georgia Veterinary School. Dr. Bob practiced both small and large animal medicine in multiple settings for over 25 years before relocating to Paso Robles from San Diego in 2008; he still maintains his licensing to practice in six states, but fortunately for us he now calls Paso Petcare home. Outgoing and exuberant, Dr. Bob has a very loyal clientele that really appreciates his dedication to his profession and his patients. Over the years of practice, he has developed particular interest in oncology and surgery, finding these cases very challenging. When not stopping by the clinic on his days off, Bob enjoys many outdoor activities, including his “55 and Better” softball team, hiking, cycling and kayaking, as well as working with children – often volunteering at his kids’ schools and participating in the “Dad’s Club.” AND, as most people know, Bob is an avid Steeler’s fan!

Dr. Carol Hansen is a native Californian and grew up in nearby Atascadero. After high school she continued her studies majoring in the biological sciences with a concentration in Zoology at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1980 and then went on to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1984 with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Following veterinary school, Carol and her husband John settled in Modesto, raising their four children there while Carol worked building her reputation as a skilled and compassionate general practitioner. Caring for almost all types of small animal pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, parakeets, fish, and the occasional tarantula, lizard or snake, she developed special interest in pocket pets and exotics. She also has experience raising horses, calves, sheep and chickens – though we don’t see them at Paso Petcare! Once their human children left the nest, Carol and John moved back to Atascadero in 2013, thrilled to be back on the central coast and enjoying meeting new people. Carol worked as a relief veterinarian for several hospitals in our area before joining our staff as a wonderful addition to our team. In her free time, Carol enjoys gardening and landscaping, hiking, caring for a menagerie of pets, and being of part the church community at Hope Lutheran Church in Atascadero.

Debbie Stacker earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in Sociology from California State University Long Beach in 1979 and subsequently worked as a buyer, manager and executive administrator in a variety of corporate, small business and non-profit settings over the next 20 years. Besides being an animal lover, her diverse background with an emphasis on customer service is reflected in Debbie’s very hands-on, people-oriented management style and she is dedicated to making our practice excel as a provider of the highest quality small animal medicine, as well as a positive and contributing part of our great community. In her free time, Debbie enjoys fashion and forensic reality shows, reading, shopping, wine tasting with friends, and spending time with her pets and family.

Michelle McCornack earned her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo in 2000 and then worked in a small animal and equine veterinary practice for several years before becoming part of our Paso Petcare family in 2002. Over the next few years she completed the practical and educational requirements that qualified her to sit for the California state licensing exam to become a Registered Veterinary Technician, which she passed in July 2010. In addition to the responsibilities of her technician position, Michelle is also an administrative assistant, doing the majority of the purchasing for our hospital, as well as assisting in training new employees, and she fills in at our front desk as needed; she really enjoys the combination of her technician / reception duties with the administrative / management part of the business. Outside of work Michelle enjoys music, watching professional football, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and cuddling with her dog Lucy.

Kari Arthur started work at Paso Petcare in 2014 after gaining progressively more skilled experience in the veterinary field over the prior 5 years, including in an emergency hospital setting. She also brought her experience in human medicine as a Certified Nursing Assistant, which helped prepare her for many of the similar duties in animal care. Kari also does pet-sitting for others and in her spare time enjoys her own menagerie of pets, playing a variety of sports, spending time with her family – especially outdoors, and of course she is known for her hair, make-up and sparkles!
Liz Fillmore also joined our staff in 2014 with about one year of experience in a veterinary practice, a passion for animals, and an eagerness to learn! She also had experience volunteering at the North County Humane Society helping to care for and socialize the cats for adoption, working as a house / pet-sitter for others over the prior 10 years, as well as extensive experience in customer service. Ronda Almodova was new to the veterinary field when she started with us in the fall of 2015, but she had over 25 years of experience in quality customer service and administrative skills – all of which are needed for her challenging position! Highly motivated and enthusiastic, Ronda learns very quickly and truly enjoys both the pets and their people – always trying to anticipate their needs and exceed their expectations! With her cheerfulness and infectious laugh her personality is enjoyed by all. Outside of work Ronda enjoys her dog Joey, her grandchildren, and weekend Harley Davidson motorcycle rides.
Nancy Shively was new to our area when she was hired in May 2016 and very excited to join our Paso Petcare team. While she did not have direct veterinary experience, she has experience in the human medical field as a licensed Respiratory Therapist, having earned her Associates of Science degree in 2003. She also has experience in office management, which includes skills that are very helpful in her receptionist position. Nancy is self-motivated, learns quickly and is always enthusiastic. In her spare time she likes to visit and spoil her ten nieces and nephews, love on her own four furry babies, watch occasionally to the beach, shopping, dinner, and movies.
Singe came to us in 2004 as the victim of animal abuse, having been dowsed with lighter fluid and set on fire. She was found by a client and rushed to our hospital in very critical condition. Fortunately, someone thought this pitiful little kitten looked hungry and offered her some food, which she very happily ate; that was her saving grace as we decided to give her a chance as long as we could keep her out of pain! After several surgeries, including a complicated and creative skin graft, and weeks of treatment, she survived – though minus a couple of her nine lives. No one was ever identified or charged for the terrible act of cruelty that brought Singe to us, but we are grateful she came into our lives and our hospital. She is a happy, healthy and loving little celebrity in our community as she helps educate about animal abuse and the wonderful possibilities of veterinary medicine. Thanks to Singe, we now have a donation fund in place to help us Care for Pets and their People, learn more about the Singe Fund here.
